Where to Stay in Seoul: Best Neighborhoods for First-Time Visitors

Choosing where to stay in Seoul can have a bigger impact on your trip than choosing the hotel itself.

Seoul is huge.

Stay in the wrong area and you may spend a surprising amount of your vacation transferring between subway lines.

Stay in the right neighborhood and many of your favorite experiences may be right outside your hotel.

For most first-time visitors, the best areas to consider are:

Myeongdong
Hongdae
Jongno
Gangnam
Seongsu
Itaewon

Each has a completely different personality.

There is no single “best” neighborhood for everyone.

The right choice depends on what you want from Seoul.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Seoul?

NeighborhoodBest ForMain AdvantageMain Drawback
MyeongdongFirst-time visitorsCentral, easy sightseeingVery touristy
HongdaeYounger travelersNightlife, cafés, airport accessNoisy in some areas
JongnoHistory & culturePalaces and old Seoul nearbyQuieter at night

SeongsuTrends & cafésFashion, K-beauty, designLess convenient for major sights

If this is your first trip to Seoul and you are unsure, I would start with:

Best overall: Myeongdong

Best for younger travelers: Hongdae

Best for Korean history: Jongno

Best for modern Seoul: Gangnam

1. Myeongdong: Best Overall for First-Time Visitors

For a first trip to Seoul, Myeongdong is the safest all-around choice.

It sits in central Seoul and gives you relatively easy access to both historic attractions and modern shopping districts.

Seoul’s official tourism guide describes Myeongdong as one of the city’s major shopping districts and notes its strong access to other parts of Seoul via Myeongdong Station on Line 4 and Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2. Visit Seoul

Why Stay in Myeongdong?

You’re close to:

  • N Seoul Tower
  • Namdaemun Market
  • Seoul Station
  • Gwanghwamun
  • Gyeongbokgung
  • Dongdaemun
  • Shopping
  • Korean skincare stores
  • Restaurants

You also have access to two useful subway corridors depending on exactly where your hotel is located.

For someone visiting Seoul for only four or five days, that’s extremely useful.

Myeongdong Is Best For

  • First-time visitors
  • Couples
  • Families
  • K-beauty shoppers
  • Short stays
  • Travelers who want central Seoul

What Myeongdong Feels Like

Expect:

  • Bright signs
  • Cosmetics stores
  • International visitors
  • Restaurants
  • Shopping
  • Street snacks
  • Busy pedestrian streets

This is not the neighborhood to choose if you’re looking for quiet local life.

Myeongdong is unapologetically tourist-friendly.

And for a first trip, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Downsides of Staying in Myeongdong

The biggest downside is that it can feel very touristy.

Restaurants and shops around the main streets are often geared toward visitors.

You may also pay more for accommodation than in less central districts.

But for first-time convenience, Myeongdong remains hard to beat.

My Rating for First-Time Visitors

★★★★★

2. Hongdae: Best for Nightlife, Cafés and Younger Travelers

If Myeongdong is the easiest first-time base, Hongdae is probably the most fun.

Hongdae is centered around Hongik University and is known for:

  • Live music
  • K-pop culture
  • Fashion
  • Bars
  • Clubs
  • Street performances
  • Cafés
  • Restaurants
  • Photo booths

Seoul’s tourism authority describes Hongdae as one of the city’s key districts for pop and indie culture, especially after dark. Visit Seoul

The Big Advantage: Airport Access

Hongdae has another major advantage:

AREX airport trains stop at Hongik University Station.

That means you can travel directly from Incheon Airport to Hongdae on the AREX All-Stop Train without first going to Seoul Station.

For international visitors, that is a major convenience.

Hongdae Is Best For

  • Travelers in their 20s and 30s
  • Solo travelers
  • Nightlife
  • K-pop fans
  • Cafés
  • Budget and mid-range travelers
  • People arriving from Incheon Airport

What Hongdae Feels Like

Hongdae stays active late.

During the day you’ll find:

  • Cafés
  • Fashion stores
  • Restaurants
  • Young shoppers

At night:

  • Street performances
  • Bars
  • Clubs
  • Karaoke
  • Busy restaurants

Seoul officially characterizes the Mapo area, which includes Hongdae, as a center of youth culture, creativity, performances and art. Visit Seoul

Downsides of Hongdae

If you’re staying directly in the busiest nightlife streets, noise can be a problem.

For a better balance, consider accommodation around:

Yeonnam-dong

or the quieter edges of Hongdae.

You still get the convenience without sleeping directly over the party.

My Rating

★★★★★ for younger travelers

★★★★☆ overall

3. Jongno: Best for Korean History and Traditional Seoul

If the reason you’re visiting Korea is history and culture, consider Jongno.

This area places you near many of Seoul’s most important historic attractions.

Seoul’s official guide identifies Jongno, Jung-gu and Yongsan as the city’s historic core, where major cultural attractions are concentrated. Visit Seoul

Nearby attractions include:

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace
  • Changdeokgung Palace
  • Bukchon Hanok Village
  • Insadong
  • Ikseon-dong
  • Gwanghwamun
  • Cheonggyecheon
  • Gwangjang Market

That’s an extraordinary amount of sightseeing within a relatively compact area.

Jongno Is Best For

  • History lovers
  • Couples
  • Mature travelers
  • Cultural travelers
  • Photographers
  • Travelers who enjoy walking

Best Parts of Jongno to Stay

Look around:

Jongno 3-ga

Great transportation and close to Ikseon-dong.

Insadong

Traditional atmosphere and convenient sightseeing.

Gwanghwamun

More business-oriented and polished.

Anguk

Excellent for Bukchon and the palaces.

Why I Like Jongno for First-Time Visitors

You can walk to attractions that would require subway trips from other neighborhoods.

For example:

Gyeongbokgung → Bukchon → Insadong → Ikseon-dong

can all be part of one walking day.

That matters because Seoul trips often become exhausting due to excessive subway travel.

Downsides

Jongno isn’t as energetic at night as Hongdae or Gangnam.

If clubs and late-night entertainment are a priority, stay elsewhere.

My Rating

★★★★★ for history

★★★★½ overall

4. Gangnam: Best for Modern and Upscale Seoul

The name hardly needs an introduction.

But Gangnam is much more than “Gangnam Style.”

It is one of Seoul’s major business, shopping and entertainment areas.

Stay here if your Seoul interests lean heavily toward:

  • Modern architecture
  • Upscale dining
  • Shopping
  • K-beauty
  • Nightlife
  • Business travel
  • K-pop-related destinations

Seoul’s official tourism materials consistently treat Gangnam as one of the city’s major visitor districts, alongside Hongdae, Jongno, Seongsu and Yongsan. Visit Seoul

Attractions Near Gangnam

You can easily reach:

  • Gangnam Station
  • COEX
  • Starfield Library
  • Bongeunsa Temple
  • Apgujeong
  • Cheongdam
  • Garosu-gil
  • Jamsil and Lotte World

Gangnam Is Best For

  • Business travelers
  • Luxury travelers
  • K-pop fans
  • K-beauty treatments
  • Shopping
  • Modern Seoul
  • Repeat visitors

The Main Problem With Gangnam

Location.

Gangnam is south of the Han River.

Many of Seoul’s classic first-time attractions are north of the river:

  • Gyeongbokgung
  • Bukchon
  • Insadong
  • Gwangjang Market
  • Myeongdong

So if most of your itinerary is historic Seoul, staying in Gangnam creates unnecessary travel.

This is why I would not automatically recommend Gangnam to every first-time visitor.

My Rating

★★★★★ for modern Seoul

★★★½ for a typical first trip

5. Seongsu: Best for Fashion, Cafés and Current Seoul Trends

Seongsu has become one of Seoul’s most talked-about neighborhoods.

It’s often compared loosely to Brooklyn because former industrial buildings have been transformed into:

  • Cafés
  • Fashion shops
  • Pop-up stores
  • Galleries
  • K-beauty spaces
  • Restaurants

Seoul includes Seongsu among the districts attracting significant attention from both domestic and international culture-focused travelers. Visit Seoul

Why Stay in Seongsu?

Because you don’t want to experience only “tourist Seoul.”

You want to experience current Seoul.

The area is especially strong for:

  • Korean fashion
  • Pop-ups
  • Cafés
  • Beauty brands
  • Design
  • Seoul Forest

Seongsu Is Best For

  • Repeat visitors
  • Fashion lovers
  • K-beauty fans
  • Café lovers
  • Younger couples
  • Social-media-focused travelers

Why I Wouldn’t Make It My First Choice for a First Visit

Most classic attractions aren’t nearby.

You will travel frequently to other parts of Seoul.

For a second Seoul trip?

I’d seriously consider staying here.

For your first-ever three-day Seoul trip?

Myeongdong, Jongno or Hongdae is more practical.

My Rating

★★★★★ for trends

★★★½ for first-timers

6. Itaewon: Best for International Food and Nightlife

Itaewon is one of Seoul’s most internationally oriented neighborhoods.

The official Seoul tourism guide describes it as a cosmopolitan area with restaurants, shopping and nightlife reflecting a wide range of international cultures. Visit Seoul

You’ll find:

  • Korean restaurants
  • American food
  • Middle Eastern food
  • European food
  • Halal restaurants
  • Bars
  • Clubs
  • Cafés

It’s particularly useful for travelers with dietary restrictions who may find international food options easier here.

Itaewon Is Best For

  • International travelers
  • Nightlife
  • Diverse food
  • Halal food
  • Longer stays
  • People who prefer cosmopolitan neighborhoods

Location

Itaewon is geographically fairly central.

However, it’s not directly connected to as many key sightseeing routes as Myeongdong or Jongno.

You’ll probably make more transfers.

Downsides

If you came to Korea specifically for traditional Korean atmosphere, Itaewon probably shouldn’t be your first choice.

It can feel more international than distinctly Korean in certain streets.

My Rating

★★★★☆ for nightlife and international food

★★★½ overall for first-time visitors

Myeongdong vs Hongdae: Which Is Better?

This is probably the most common choice.

Choose Myeongdong if:

You want:

  • Easy sightseeing
  • Central location
  • Shopping
  • K-beauty
  • Short transportation times
  • A first-timer-friendly environment

Choose Hongdae if:

You want:

  • Nightlife
  • Cafés
  • Younger atmosphere
  • K-pop
  • Airport convenience
  • Late-night food

My Choice?

First trip with 4–5 sightseeing days: Myeongdong

Young solo traveler or nightlife-focused trip: Hongdae

Myeongdong vs Gangnam

Choose Myeongdong for a classic first trip.

Choose Gangnam if your priorities are:

  • K-beauty
  • Modern shopping
  • Business
  • Upscale hotels
  • Apgujeong/Cheongdam
  • COEX

For a normal sightseeing itinerary, Myeongdong has the stronger location.

Jongno vs Myeongdong

This is actually a tougher choice.

Choose Jongno for:

  • Palaces
  • Traditional Korea
  • Walking
  • Hanok neighborhoods
  • Quiet evenings

Choose Myeongdong for:

  • Shopping
  • Convenience
  • Restaurants
  • Modern amenities
  • Easier first-trip experience

If Korean culture is your priority, I’d choose Jongno.

Where Should Families Stay?

My first choices would be:

Myeongdong

or

Jongno

Both provide relatively easy sightseeing.

Myeongdong has more shopping and tourist infrastructure.

Jongno offers quieter areas and easier access to historic sites.

With children, reducing transportation time becomes especially valuable.

Where Should Solo Travelers Stay?

My choice:

Hongdae

Why?

There are:

  • Plenty of people around
  • Restaurants open late
  • Cafés
  • Hostels
  • Social activities
  • Airport train access

Myeongdong is also a very safe-feeling and convenient alternative for travelers who prefer quieter evenings.

Where Should Couples Stay?

Depends on the type of trip.

First romantic trip to Seoul

Myeongdong or Jongno

Trendy cafés and fashion

Seongsu

Nightlife

Hongdae

Luxury trip

Gangnam

Where Should K-Pop Fans Stay?

Consider:

Hongdae

for younger music culture and nightlife.

or

Gangnam

for proximity to areas such as:

  • Cheongdam
  • Apgujeong
  • COEX
  • K-pop-related businesses

Seoul’s tourism authority specifically highlights Gangnam, Hongdae, Jongno, Seongsu and Yongsan as key districts associated with contemporary Korean cultural experiences. Visit Seoul

Where Should K-Beauty Shoppers Stay?

Top choices:

1. Myeongdong

Best overall for cosmetics shopping.

2. Seongsu

Best for newer beauty brands, flagships and pop-ups.

3. Gangnam

Best for beauty clinics and upscale shopping.

If your trip includes skincare treatments, Gangnam can become much more attractive as a base.

Best Subway Stations to Stay Near

The neighborhood name alone isn’t enough.

Try to stay within roughly 5–10 minutes’ walk of a subway station.

That can matter more than having a slightly nicer hotel farther away.

Good stations include:

Myeongdong Station

Euljiro 1-ga Station

Hongik University Station

Jongno 3-ga Station

Anguk Station

Gangnam Station

Seongsu Station

Itaewon Station

A hotel that’s 20 minutes uphill from a station becomes much less attractive after you’ve already walked 20,000 steps that day.

That is not a theoretical problem in Seoul.

Don’t Choose a Hotel Based Only on Price

A common mistake is finding a cheap hotel far from central Seoul.

You save perhaps $15–30 per night.

Then you spend:

  • More time commuting
  • More money on taxis
  • More energy transferring trains

Your accommodation should reduce friction.

For a short trip, location is usually more valuable than a slightly larger room.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Seoul?

For a first trip:

3 nights: minimum

4–5 nights: excellent

6–7 nights: relaxed and allows deeper neighborhood exploration

If you’re traveling around Korea for one week, spend at least 3 nights in Seoul.

For a 10–14 day trip, 4–6 nights works well.

My Overall Ranking for a First Seoul Trip

For a typical American first-time visitor, I would rank them:

1. Myeongdong

Best balance of location, transportation, shopping and sightseeing.

2. Hongdae

Best if you’re younger, want nightlife, or value easy airport access.

3. Jongno

Arguably better than Myeongdong for travelers mainly interested in Korean culture and history.

4. Gangnam

Excellent district, but not the most efficient location for classic first-trip sightseeing.

5. Seongsu

Fantastic neighborhood, but more attractive once you’ve already experienced Seoul’s major sights.

6. Itaewon

Useful for nightlife and international food, but less compelling as a general sightseeing base.

This ranking is about where to sleep, not which neighborhood is most interesting. That’s an important distinction.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors?

For most first-time visitors, Myeongdong offers the best combination of central location, public transportation, shopping, restaurants and access to major attractions.

Is Myeongdong or Hongdae better?

Myeongdong is better for sightseeing and a first trip.

Hongdae is better for nightlife, youth culture and airport access.

Is Gangnam a good place to stay in Seoul?

Yes, particularly for business, shopping, K-beauty and modern Seoul.

However, many historic attractions are north of the Han River, so tourists focused on palaces and traditional neighborhoods may spend more time commuting.

Is Hongdae too noisy?

The busiest streets can be.

Choose accommodation around the quieter edges of Hongdae or Yeonnam-dong if nightlife noise concerns you.

Should I stay near Seoul Station?

Seoul Station is extremely convenient for transportation, especially AREX and intercity trains.

However, the immediate station area generally has less neighborhood atmosphere than Myeongdong, Hongdae or Jongno.

It is a practical choice rather than my favorite sightseeing base.

Is Seoul easy to get around from any neighborhood?

Seoul’s subway network is extensive, so yes.

But that doesn’t mean location doesn’t matter.

A well-located hotel can save several hours of transportation over a five-day trip.

Final Recommendation

If you want the simple answer:

First trip: Myeongdong
Young and social: Hongdae
History: Jongno
Modern and upscale: Gangnam
Fashion and cafés: Seongsu
International food and nightlife: Itaewon

For most American travelers visiting Seoul for the first time, I’d still choose Myeongdong or Jongno.

They place you near the part of Seoul you’re most likely to explore during your first few days.

Hongdae is the strongest alternative if nightlife and airport access matter more.

And remember:

Choose the neighborhood first. Choose the hotel second.

A beautiful hotel in an inconvenient location is still an inconvenient hotel.
